I’m wondering if you’re able to create custom status is per pipeline step. For example comp pipeline step can have different statuses than a lighting pipeline step. The reason for this ask is we want to create a in Light comp status and in comp status for lighting versions. But not have this appear under the comp statuses.

As far as I know, Task Status visibility is per-project only, so this would not be possible.
Statusses can also be managed per permission group so perhaps you just need to duplicate the artist permission group and add lighters into a “light” permissions group and compers in a “comp” permission group.
Then you can manage the visible statusses per permission group.
