what?
Are there any plans for 360 video support for review like Syncsketch?
Hi Ricardo,
Thank you for the reply. I’m interested in reviewing EXR’s using Creative Review. Is this possible?
Hi Kris_nDe,
Thanks for for your question. We’ve logged this into our backlog. We have no immediate plans for this at the moment, but we’ll be evaluating our priorities as development continues. We’ll update if there are any changes.
Thanks
Hi Michael,
Creative Review is a Web Player so it can’t playback exr sequences.
The same Review tools are available in Sg Create and RV which allow you to playback EXR Sequences.
Hi Ricardo,
Apologies, I should’ve stated that I am a longtime user of Autodesk Shotgun, Shotgrid and Flow so I am aware of the various attempts to improve the review process over the years. I’m sort of tiptoeing around the subject so I might as well just dive straight in.
If we are to embrace another review tool then it should be available across all platforms for all types of media. We’ve had Live Review, Screening Room, Shotgun Create and the rather poorly implemented Media page (which never really understood Episodes) and they all work in slightly different ways.
At the moment, Screening Room is the only tool that works across multiple platforms with EXRs, QuickTime and hosted/streaming media so it would be great to get some clarity on what Autodesk’s plans are.
so… Will the Creative Review toolset be made available for RV or OpenRV or are we stuck with Screening Room?
Will any of the old tools be improved, fixed or deprecated, is Create going to be developed further, will the media page be fixed to present Episodes correctly, etc etc. Also, are we fine uploading 4k media to Shotgrid?
Personally, I’m reluctant to throw our support behind another tool when I don’t know what the plans are for it. I’ve been here before and I can foresee further fragmentation of the review process if these decisions aren’t explained early on.
Apologies for the rant but I’m sure you’ll appreciate that we pay a small fortune for Flow.
Hey Michael,
I am totally on board with what you’ve written and indeed it would be good to see the ultimate plan and how the other methods/tools fit in.
Creative Review’s “looks” are very similar to Create but indeed Create doesn’t support any customisation and OCIO integration so it would be great to see the Creative Review experience inside RV and have it reach feature parity with Screening Room.
Also, a note on 4k, I don’t think anything is stopping you from doing DIY transcoding and uploading 4K MP4’s to SG.
During the pandemic we did higher quality (more keyframes and higher quality) transcoding for some versions so Supervisors could essentially review things from home a bit better on a frame by frame basis. It did however require some balance considering cloud media being several gigs in size will obviously make it slow to cache.
Create is DOA, its a black box that doesn’t allow for customization or extension of its functionality. I brought this points up with the AD team when we met with them recently. Not sure who steering the boat for FLOW over there, but they need to consult with the industry they are serving to see what we really need.
I would say that Create on it’s own is actually very valuable if a few things where fixed.
It’s not RV indeed but not everyone needs RV, Create would serve a great purpose for in-house review for Artists and their immediate supervisors.
To Fix:
- Integrate OCIO via a way that we can hook into so we can set the ocio variables we need for basic contexts and enable looks for the current exr media.
i.e.a hook that is run when media is loaded - Fix the addition of custom note fields (which is broken/unimplemented but active in the settings)
ShotGrid Create Configure note form - Make the filters configurable/hookable/flexible so we can customize what versions/tasks/reviews are shown for a user based on in-studio rules instead of only “one status” and “user is reviewer”
- Give us a way to turn off the “create Version” and various other buttons/features if we do not want to use these.
Or…. Opensource it ![]()
Sounds like you want to customize it… ![]()

(my point)
Also, what happened to the last Create Review app (I forget its name)(it was deprecated) I’m hesitant to adopt and roll out these newer tools to production given ADs track record and short sightedness.
Yes, that would be amazing.
Creative Review looks great, I don’t want to make it default yet until we know that we can use it across all media types. As a result, very few people are using it.
We did use Create in the hope that OCIO / colour management would follow but sadly the development stalled. Shame as it was a nice tool.
I would argue these are a couple of relatively small additions that would make it a very usable tool, without adding a huge amount of customisation.
But if you give the ability to play local EXR’s then its only usefull if we can apply OCIO.
And similarly if you give filtered views for Tasks, Reviews and playlists, we need to be able to filter them to be usefull to that user.
Anyway… OpenCreate ? ![]()
Seconded! ![]()
The irony here, is that when we upload a 4K mp4 it is already on the site. Often the render often is already encoded to the desired settings that would happen in the “transcoding” operation on the site. And in fact, with an env variable setting, RV can pull the original uploaded 4K mp4. So it seems like it would be useful to also allow Creative Review to pull this already uploaded 4K mp4 as upload.
I know there are technical reasons, but it has always seemed a little crazy to me that I should have to universally turn off transcoding on my site, then DIY transcode to upload a 4K movie when the site may already have that same media already.
C
I agree.
However technically you dont have to turn off transcoding on the site.
As long as you upload your DIY transcoded media to the uploaded_movie_mp4 field then the SG transcoder will not kick in.
I would love it if “show tasks” while doing notes that they stay open for the review session. Currently there are two behaviors that increase my mouse clicks
- If I choose to display tasks it shows “ALL” and I have to click “show” tasks to see other related task with which to redirect my note. Once I select one of the tasks, they list then collapses down again. If I want to select multiple tasks, I have to show them again. this is tedious.
- Also if I make new notes, I would want the option for the note to remember that I was showing tasks
- side note….I think wjen I click the Tasks checkbox which effectively show an area with my potential tasks. Why would I then need to redundantly click “Show Tasks”. Effectively showing tasks was already what I was asking it to show by clicking that checkbox. I can appreciate that someone may NOT want that. So it would be good to have a sticky option as to the default behavior.
Hey Christopher,
Thanks for the feedback. We’ve added this to our internal system and we’ll take a look as part of our continued work for prioritization potential features.
As always, thanks for your feedback. We appreciate it. Cheers
