RV 2026.0.0 Release is available!

Release Date: July 16, 2026

Download available here.

IMPORTANT: RV 2026 is the last release to support Intel-based Macs.

We are happy to announce the release of RV 2026.0.0!

This release brings several upgrades and stability to the application to be compliant with the VFX Reference Platform CY2025.

This release also brings new features by adding Shapes and Text support to the Annotation toolset, as well as the possibility to have Thumbnails and Filmstrips generated for the media sources in RV’s Session Manager.

Known Issues

  • 10-bit monitor output with Qt6 is not supported in this release. [SG-42267]
  • Side-by-side Compare mode does not work as expected while sharing a Playlist in a Live Review session with Review player if Continuous Playback is enable. [SG-44116]

New Features

  • Session Manager now generates and displays thumbnails and filmstrips for local and Flow Production Tracking media sources. Thumbnails and filmstrips refresh automatically when a source is modified, so previews stay in sync with the underlying media. A new Session Manager setting lets you turn thumbnail generation off when you want to reduce overhead or skip previews entirely. [SG-42109]
  • Shape and text annotations — The annotation tool now supports Shapes and Text. These annotations can be shared within a Live Review session between RV and Flow Production Tracking Review. [SG-42887]
  • Live Review sessions are now properly left after a period of user inactivity. [SG-43259]
  • The selected OCIO config is now saved in RV’s settings, resolving an “OCIO environment variable not set” error after activating the feature. [SG-35309]
  • Added an alt/option hotkey and environment variable ( RV_NO_SEQUENCE_PATTERN) to prevent RV from loading images as an image sequence. [SG-41979]
  • Added crash-dump generation capabilities to RV. [SG-42630]
  • Added support for AJA 12G-SDI output over a single link. [SG-27382, SG-42264]

SDK / Platform Updates

  • Updated AJA SDK to version 17.6.0. [SG-42175]
  • Updated Boost to 1.85.0 (VFX Reference Platform CY2025). [SG-42380]
  • Updated NumPy to 1.26.4 (VFX Reference Platform CY2025). [SG-42372]
  • Updated OpenEXR to 3.3.6 (VFX Reference Platform CY2025). [SG-42374]
  • Updated OCIO to 2.4.2 (VFX Reference Platform CY2025). [SG-42375]
  • Updated minimum Visual Studio platform toolset to 17.6 (VFX Reference Platform CY2025). [SG-42373]
  • Updated FFmpeg to version 8.0. [SG-42382]
  • Refactored Apple ProRes decoding. [SG-42419]
  • Rebuilt OpenSSL 3.0.0 with enable-md2 to restore MD2 symbol support. [SG-43099]
  • Addressed libpng vulnerability CVE-2026-25646. [SG-42121]

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed events from previous connections still being processed after rejoining a Live Review session. [SG-41466]

  • Fixed missing annotations on RV. [SG-43249]
  • Fixed frames with an annotation plus an erased annotation getting stuck in Hold mode during Live Review sessions with Flow Production Tracking Review. [SG-43908]
  • Fixed the text annotation size slider no longer being taken into account. [SG-43924]

I’m sorry to report this again and a ticket is already logged about it (SG-40456), but opening any commercial codecs (like H264) from a RV session that wasn’t authenticated, won’t load the media.

Steps to reproduce:
On Linux:

  1. Clear your authentication cache (~.rv, ~./config/TweakSoftware, ~/.local/share/TweakSoftware)
  2. Open a h264 media through CLI (/opt/RV/bin/rv /my/file.mov)
  3. Authenticate RV (here in 2025.0.0 rv crashed. Now we can authenticate since 2025.1.0)
  4. When Authenticated, that RV session won’t recognize any commercial ffmpeg codec (thus the H264 media we just tried to open)

Expected Behavior:
Opening a H264 media while RV isn’t authenticated, the H264 media should be able to load without any issue after the user has authenticated (without closing reopening RV)

Workaround
Close RV and re-open RV. But this workaround isn’t a viable since we are using RV as our default media player in Maya for animators. So every now and then, animators doesnt undertand why “RV cannot open their playblast”.

** For this reason alone, we are stuck using RV 2023

Probably the source of the issue

I believe the source of the issue is because RV is loading the mio_ffmpeg_commercial.so library only if RV is already authenticated. If RV wasn’t authenticated, RV won’t try to load mio_ffmpeg_commercial.so again after the user authenticate

Hi,

switching media representations from mov to frames is not wroking anymore in 2026. 2025.1.1 is working flawlessly in that regard.

Testing with an untouched vanilla version on Windows 11.

After switching multiple times to Frames its working (as can bee seen in the logs).

We are sticking to the 2025 releases for now.

Best,

Tobi
