Hi! I’m currently learning about pipeline TD workflows and had a quick question I was curious about.
If your studio handles multiple types of projects like film, animation, series, or commercials all with slightly different folder structures or workflows, how do you manage that in ShotGrid?
Do you usually set up separate tk-config for each project type?
Or do you prefer to handle it all under a single config using conditional logic in the templates?(is this possible?)
I’m asking because I was curious how large studios handle multiple productions running in parallel.
In most of the studios I know we just have a structure with sequences and shots on disk.
We then set up different Project templates on SG to deal with the nuance of having an episode or not.
The episode grouping is then just in the Browser and breadcrumbs on SG but not reflected in the folder structure.

As long as your sequence and shotnames still include the episode name as identifier this will work just fine and keep things simple in toolkit.
And for commercials where you don’t have sequences (sometimes you do) you can just create a dummy sequence name to reflect the whole commercial and stash shots in that.
We start out with a mostly-universal config but when a new project starts we copy that and make a config specific to that project. Then, it can change however it needs to without affecting other projects. Projects not using Sequences don’t have to include it in their templates, Projects that want to organize assets in a different way, can. There is still a lot of consistancy and repeated patterns in the projects (and they all must use the sameShotgrid site/schema), but it builds a lot of good will with a team when they don’t feel like they have to conform to practices and directory structures or filenames that feel irrelevant to their workflow.
