Accessing your office computers from home

[This post is part of a series of articles about working from home in Shotgun.]

The least disruptive way to set up working from home may be to put in place a remote desktop solution. There are multiple options available with different characteristics.

On the lower end, solutions like VNC and Windows’ Remote Desktop are free but may not meet your performance needs.

On the higher end, you can invest in a hardware based solution like Teradici, which can provide a 4k video stream at 60 frames per second and very low latency, but requires dedicated hardware.

There is a wide breadth of solutions, paid and free, and the Visual Effects Society has made a list that your team may consider. You can read more about them at this page in the What are the (secure) remote desktop solutions? section.

VPNs are also covered by the VES paper and can be found under the VPN solutions section.

If you have found issues using Maya, Houdini, Nuke or others with remote desktop software, please let us know in the comments if you’ve found a workaround. Note that we have our own post about how to best use RV remotely.
