Shotgun Toolkit to deprecate Python 2.6 support on May 1st, 2021

Hi everyone,

With Python 3 support out of the door for a couple of months now, the Shotgun Ecosystem team would like to announce that version v0.20.0 of tk-core will be deprecating Toolkit’s support for Python 2.6. This change will happen on May 1st, 2021.

If your studio needs to keep using Python 2.6 past that date, you can keep using a prior version of the Toolkit core. Keep in mind, however, that you will be blocked from upgrading to newer versions of our Toolkit applications, frameworks, and engines as new features are introduced in tk-core that are mandatory for these apps, frameworks and engines to work.

Note that the deprecation notice only applies to Toolkit. We have no announcement to make regarding the deprecation of the Python API’s and the Shotgun Event Daemon’s support for Python 2.6.

Please reach out to us if you have any concerns about this upcoming change.

I notice you specifically said 2.6 and not 2.7 - what is the EOL expected for 2.7?

Thanks!

Excellent question Dennis, I should have mentioned it!

We’re fully aware that a lot of studios are not going to move to Python 3 this year and will be using older versions of Maya/Nuke/Houdini for years to come. We do not know at the moment when Toolkit will drop support for Python 2.7.
