Best Practise for versioning forked app?

What is the best practise for Versioning forked apps?
For example, I may have forked v0.2.4 of the tk-houdini-mantranode app and need to version our tweaks to the mantranode for our own purposes.

I know that suffixing some letters works but can we suffix letters and a internal version number?
Or what would be the best practise?
