Dear Flow Production Tracking (FPT) Community,
Following the Python Software Foundation’s schedule, Python 3.9 reached its end of life in October 2025. As a result, on March 15, 2027 Autodesk will stop providing support for Toolkit running on Python 3.9 and for ShotGrid Desktop 1.8.
This means that from March 15, 2027:
- New Toolkit components will show deprecation warnings and log messages when run on Python 3.9.
- Nothing breaks on this date: your existing setups will keep working.
But to minimize disruptions, we recommend you do the following before March 15, 2027:
- Migrate your Toolkit integrations to a supported Python version (3.10 or later). We recommend migrating to the latest supported version, Python 3.13.
- Update FPT Desktop to a supported version (1.9 or later). We recommend updating to version 3.0 if possible.
Looking ahead: One year later, on March 15, 2028, compatibility will be removed, and newly released Toolkit components will no longer run on Python 3.9 or ShotGrid Desktop 1.8. We will send a separate reminder well before then, so consider this an advance notice.
For more information about the currently supported versions of Python and FPT Desktop, visit the Platform Supported Versions document.
Upgrading should not introduce any breaking changes, but please proceed with care and test all your critical workflows before propagating the changes more broadly.
We acknowledge that this change could be disruptive, but updating our products to the latest standards is required for Autodesk to deliver secure software.
Questions & Answers
What will happen on March 15, 2027?
Autodesk will stop providing support to Toolkit users on Python 3.9 and/or ShotGrid Desktop 1.8.
New Toolkit component releases will show deprecation warnings when run on Python 3.9, but nothing breaks: existing setups keep working.
What will happen on March 15, 2028?
Compatibility is discontinued. New versions of Toolkit components will no longer run on Python 3.9 or ShotGrid Desktop 1.8. To keep receiving updates, you must be on Python 3.10 or later.
Why are you discontinuing Python 3.9?
Python 3.9 reached its end of life on October 31, 2025, so for security reasons Autodesk can no longer provide support for this version.
You can see Python’s official end-of-life schedule at Status of Python versions
Why are you discontinuing ShotGrid Desktop 1.8?
ShotGrid Desktop 1.8 shipped with Python 3.9. As Python 3.9 is no longer supported, we can no longer provide support for ShotGrid Desktop 1.8.
What about previous versions of ShotGrid Desktop?
Autodesk has stopped supporting ShotGrid Desktop versions earlier than 1.8 with the previous Python 2.7 and Python 3.7 end-of-support rounds.
For more information about the currently supported versions, visit our Platform Supported Versions document.
I am using FPT Toolkit with Python 3.10/3.11/3.13, am I impacted by this change?
No.
But please read the question below about DCC versions.
I am using ShotGrid Desktop 1.9 or FPT Desktop 2.x/3.x, am I impacted by this change?
No.
But please read the question below about DCC versions. Also, verify that none of your project configurations are using Python 3.9.
Will this change affect the support of Toolkit engines (for DCCs)?
Yes, DCC versions using Python 3.9 will no longer be supported after March 15, 2027.
Currently supported DCC versions including Python 3.9 are the following:
- 3ds Max 2023
- Flame 2023 and 2024
- Houdini 19.5
- Mari 6
- Maya 2023
- Motion Builder 2023
- Nuke / Hiero 14
These versions will no longer be supported after March 15, 2027.
For more information about the currently supported engines, visit our Engine Supported Versions document.
Which Python versions are currently supported for FPT Toolkit?
Autodesk supports the following Python versions for FPT Toolkit:
- Python 3.13
- Python 3.11
- Python 3.10
- Python 3.9 - End of support March 15, 2027
Up-to-date information can be found in our Platform Supported Versions document.
Which ShotGrid Desktop / FPT Desktop versions are currently supported?
Autodesk supports the following versions:
- FPT Desktop 3
- FPT Desktop 2
- FPT Desktop 1.9
- ShotGrid Desktop 1.8 - End of support March 15, 2027
Up-to-date information can be found in our Platform Supported Versions document.
I need to continue using Python 3.9, what should I do?
Integrations using Python 3.9 will not stop working immediately, but Autodesk will no longer be able to support this version, and you will stop receiving fixes and security updates. Over time an unsupported integration may eventually stop working, so we recommend planning for a migration as soon as possible.
If you need to stay on Python 3.9 for now, disable automatic component updates to avoid unexpected disruptions.
I migrated to Python 3.10/3.11/3.13 but my pipeline is now broken
This is not expected, so please open a case with support, making sure to include all related configuration details.
